Chinchillas are cute animals that will win your heart from the first minute. They do not cause allergies, are non-aggressive, can be trained and are simply cheerful and cheerful pets.
It is worth remembering that chinchillas are nocturnal animals, so it is better to put the cage away from the bedroom or the nursery – active rodents will not let you sleep. Since mountain plateaus are the natural habitat of chinchillas, the air temperature should be 16-20 degrees, the heat adversely affects their body. It is better to put the cage away from direct sunlight, heating appliances, drafts.
The minimum dimensions of the cage for one individual are 70x50x50 centimeters, it should not be too high: the animals quickly learn to climb walls, can break and get injured. The optimal mesh size is 20×20 mm. The cage must be galvanized, a tray is installed in it, which is easily pulled out for cleaning. There must be shelters: how many animals – so many houses, chinchillas can quarrel among themselves, and then everyone will have their own corner. It is also recommended to equip the cage with poles, small tunnels, ladders. There is no need to buy a wheel: chinchillas have a weak spine.
You can’t let chinchillas run around the apartment unattended: firstly, the animal can be pinched by the door or step on it, and secondly, it is still a rodent, so that it will try everything on the tooth: starting with wallpaper and ending with wiring.
Sawdust or hay are used as litter; animals cannot live on a metal grate. The cage must have a drinking bowl with clean water, a ceramic and metal feeder. It is best if these accessories are fixed to the rods of the cage, otherwise the animals can turn them over. A crate or plate with sea or quartz clear sand is used as a bathing facility, chinchillas are well-known cleanlings, and such sand will not damage their fur. You can teach animals to the toilet: in one of the corners of the cage they put a special tray with filler.
Chinchillas are very shy, so you should not turn on bright lights, listen to unnecessarily loud music, shout at animals or squeeze them. You need to take them into your hands very carefully: with one hand support the tummy and legs, with the other at the base of the tail. By the way, rumors that chinchillas smell bad are a myth, it all depends on whether you keep their home clean. It is necessary to regularly change the water in the drinking bowl, wash the feeders, bathes, put a new litter once a week. At least once a month, the cage and all accessories must be disinfected.
Animals are fed once a day, mainly in the evening – from 6 to 9 hours. Wet foods should not be given to chinchillas, as the stomach may be disturbed. These rodents have a long intestine, so the diet should be selected carefully.
The lion’s share of their food is grain feed, oilseeds and legumes, bran. You can buy ready-made feed: the main mixture consists of bran, sprouted wheat, dry yeast. Bone meal, flaxseed. Cereals – barley, oats, wheat, oatmeal, milk powder. Chinchillas are also required to give hay – for this, a special sennik is made in the cage. Hay is the leaves of nettle, plantain, coltsfoot, alfalfa, vetch, strawberry, meadow grass. The greens are thoroughly washed and dried in the shade. In spring and summer, rodents should have green food.
You can give slices of fruits and vegetables, sometimes treat your pet with nuts and berries. Since chinchillas constantly grow teeth, the cage should have a grindstone and mineral stone. It is also recommended to lay the branches of trees: alder, apple, linden, birch, willow, mountain ash, hazel. You can not give the branches of conifers, oak, stone fruit and citrus trees, ledum, maple, lilac, elderberry.
First of all, you need to pick up a pair: the animals do not agree with each partner, they quarrel, behave aggressively towards each other, lose weight. If this happens, chinchillas are best planted. You can keep a male and several females in a cage. Rodents reach puberty at 7-8 months, sometimes earlier.
After mating, 115-120 days pass, and cubs are born (from 1 to 6). Two mating can occur in a year, after giving birth a day later the female can become pregnant again. If pregnancy occurs 3 times a year, this will affect the quality of the offspring.
Childbirth passes quickly: completely developed chinchillas are born, they weigh 30-60 grams. The female eats the placenta and feeds the offspring herself. Of the 3 pairs of mammary glands in the mother, one or two is active. At the age of 2 months, the cubs are weaned.
Chinchillas live 15 years or more, they easily get used to the owners and give a sea of positive.
