Choosing a cage for chinchilla

Chinchilla House

Where should the chinchilla live

Despite the fact that you plan to tame the animal in the future and make friends with it (read how to tame a chinchilla), you should be aware that your chinchilla will be calmer and safer, especially if other pets live in your house, if she has her own cage house. Therefore, the question of where the chinchilla should live, we answer unequivocally – she must live in a cage specially equipped for her living. Neither in the drawer (this is not a rabbit for you), nor in a large glass jar, nor in a plastic basin or in a shoe box.

If you take responsibility for acquiring this animal, you must be prepared for the fact that you have to purchase a cage for the chinchilla.

And, here are what types of cells are, which are better, and which have a number of significant drawbacks – we will tell you in our next paragraph of the article

Types of cages for chinchillas

From the moment that a chinchilla began to live next to a person, the latter began to think about which chinchilla cage would be more convenient and better to spend the days of his life in. The result of such deliberation was different cell variants for these creatures. And, more about each of these options, about their advantages and disadvantages, we will now tell you.

Metal cages for chinchillas

But, do not rush to think that you so quickly found the perfect cage for your pet. These cages are very noisy, and when the animal runs around the floors of its "houses"- he will make a lot of noise. This is unlikely to make you happy if the cage is in the room where you relax or work. Another drawback, since the bottom of the cage is made in the form of a dense metal mesh, the debris from the cage, food debris will periodically appear on the floor in your room.
Another drawback, which, however, can be easily fixed, is that the shelves in such cells are most often made of either plastic or metal – in order to make your chinchilla comfortable – be sure to replace them with wooden ones.

Chinchilla display case

If you decide to immediately get a couple of animals, and in the future you plan to breed them (more about breeding chinchillas), you will of course consider a more spacious cage – the so-called showcase. Such showcase cells look more representative than metal cells, and can be made of various materials. And here the fun begins.

Chinchillas really like wooden cases – they are closer to natural materials, it’s nice to live in such a wooden house, and if necessary, you can even sharpen your teeth on the walls of such a display case. They are not expensive, but the peculiarity of wood, as a material for the cage, is that wood absorbs smells and moisture well, therefore, over time, your wooden display case will start to smell specifically, and the floor and its walls may swell from moisture. All your attempts to remove the smell by disinfecting the rodent’s habitat can end very badly. The tree can absorb disinfectants, and when the chinchilla starts to bite it, it can be poisoned. As an option, you can, of course, offer a combined wooden version, where the floor is made of laminate, fiberboard or other material that is not so vulnerable to moisture, but the decision is worthy of being called the best – it is up to you to decide.

Another version of the showcase is from the profile. Many chinchilla breeders prefer it. So much more convenient, reliable and more beautiful. It is easy to remove such a showcase from the profile, they serve for a long time and do not lose their attractive appearance. But, if you buy a ready-made display case – be sure to make sure that the grid is firmly fixed, that the partitions and glass do not “walk”. It will depend on whether your chinchillas run away and if they cripple with such an attempt to escape. As for the cost of such display cases from a profile, they are, of course, more expensive than wooden display cases.

Homemade Cell Option

Choosing A Cage For Chinchilla

Among those people who start chinchillas are many handymen. Therefore, sometimes it is possible to encounter very unusual variants of cells for chinchillas. For example, with options for showcases, "alterations." To make such a showcase cell, the craftsmen take bookcases or for the office, remove the shelves from it, remove the doors, insert the windows, cut openings in the side walls, process the edges of all surfaces for safety, insert the nets, screw the wooden shelves and the original and exclusive housing for the chinchilla is ready to receive its owner.

If you have the time, materials and desire – you can make a house for your chinchilla with your own hands, the cost of such a cage is low, it is easy to clean, it doesn’t fit badly into the interior and amuses your vanity every time you look at it. The difficulty in this option is that you are such a master and find the right material for such a makeshift cell.

Basic requirements for a chinchilla cage

Whichever variant of the cage you choose for the animal, you should make sure that it is suitable for your pet. I.e,

The cage or display case should be cozy, bright, warm, dry and well ventilated.

The minimum cell sizes are as follows: 50 centimeters long by 50 centimeters wide by 70 centimeters high. This is a "living wage". Ideally, there should be more area for one chinchilla, since these animals are unusually active, and in a cramped space they can just start to hurt (learn all about chinchilla diseases). If you start several animals, then these cell sizes should be multiplied by the number of chinchillas living together, and add area for active games and active pastime of your pets.

For safety reasons, the distance between the rods or mesh cells in the cage or in the display case should not be more than 2 centimeters. If this distance is less, small chinchillas will be able to get out and run away.

For your convenience, and for cleanliness in the cages, it is better to replace the floor in it with a retractable metal tray, on which you will pour small chips and sawdust as a soft litter for the chinchilla. Do not forget to change such bedding at least 1 time per week, and wash the tray itself.

Chinchilla Cage Accessories

If you think that it’s enough to just buy a cage for a chinchilla, lay a litter in it, launch a small animal and he will be happy with his housewarming – you are mistaken. In order for the life of your little pet to be comfortable, safe, convenient and happy, you should take care of purchasing additional accessories for the chinchilla cage.

Chinchilla House

Cage with optional accessories

If you have a sufficiently spacious cage or showcase, you must definitely install a house for the animal in it. The dimensions of the house can be slightly larger than the dimensions of the animal itself, because the chinchilla will hide in it when it wants to, or it will rest there.

If the size of the cage does not allow you to put such a house, or your chinchilla refuses such an artificial shelter – in fact, this happens quite often, make sure that special shelves or niches are installed in the cage where the animal could hide and where it is could retire. The width of such a shelf or niche should be at least 15 centimeters, since chinchillas often rest in such secluded places, stretched out to their full height. However, do not try to place such shelves at high altitudes – the animal may fall and be crippled.

Chinchilla feeder

The feeder can be made of plastic, it should be quite deep and comfortable for the chinchilla itself. Do not forget to wash it regularly. And, so that the chinchilla does not turn it over during its active games, it is better to attach it to the cage door or to the front wall.

Chinchilla drinker

Your pet needs fresh and clean water. Pour it into a drinker that you can attach to the wall or door of the cage. To put a drinker on the floor – we do not recommend. Chinchilla easily flips it over, sawdust or garbage can get into the water. Well, in the worst case scenario – your pet will think that this is his new toilet. As for the drinker option – that is, nipple or ball – here you have to choose with your pet. The main thing is that the drinker does not leak.

Hay feeder

Mineral or salt stone

Your pet needs such a stone so that it can grind its teeth. So that the stone is not lost, but is in a conspicuous place and the chinchilla knows what to do with it, attach it to the wall of the cage.

Chinchilla toilet

In fact, chinchillas are neat and tidy creatures. Therefore, you can safely put a toilet tray into their cage.

Chinchilla Toys

If the cage of your pet is spacious enough, and you are a real caring owner, you should definitely take care to please your chinchilla with toys, as these animals are very active and playful. Take care of purchasing a running wheel (just don’t buy a metal one – it’s extremely traumatic, it’s better to prefer a plastic one that attaches to the wall of the cage), small plastic tunnels (their chinchillas simply adore), wooden toys, a couple of branches or even a birch stump.

Sand bath

Since chinchillas do not take quite water procedures, but wash themselves in the sand, a small container with such sand should be in the cage. It is also better to strengthen it so that the chinchilla cannot turn it over.

Where to put a cage with chinchilla

Of course, the place where the cage with your pet will stand will depend on how large the cage will be and how large your indoor area is. However, in any case, remember the most important rules.

A cage with a chinchilla should not be in a draft, stand on the floor, be in direct sunlight, stand near electric or gas appliances.

The safety and comfort of your pet in the future depends on compliance with these basic conditions.

Chinchilla cage cleaning

To ensure that your pet is healthy and nothing in your house (in particular, a specific smell) reminds you that you are a chinchilla breeder, you should regularly clean and disinfect the cage, change the litter in it, wash the toilet and all your pet’s accessories Do not be lazy to do this.
At the same time, cosmetic cleaning is carried out daily and includes cleaning of the remains of food and garbage, litter replacement, washing of drinking bowls and feeders. General cleaning is carried out at least 1 time per week or even more often, and includes disinfection of all surfaces with their subsequent washing. A dry and clean cage after this should still be dried for several hours and only after that fill up fresh sawdust and transplant the animal into the cage. By the way

At the time of harvesting the cage, the chinchilla should be in a temporary cage shelter.
