Types Of Toys And Accessories For Chinchillas

Chinchillas are active, positive and very funny animals. Many breeders buy and install special toys in their cages to diversify their pet’s days. In addition to toys, furry pets need accessories such as carrying and a wool brush. Some owners also buy harnesses and leashes, but with their use there are many risks.

Types of Chinchilla Toys

Toys for fluffy rodents are made of different materials, but there is one general requirement for everyone – safety. Therefore, do not buy and use toys from:

  • Plastics
  • Rubber
  • Plexiglass
  • Cardboard, polystyrene or paper,
  • Any material with a high content of gels, paints or varnishes,
  • Any material containing cement or lime.

Most often, toys for animals are made of ceramics, wood, stone, metal and plant fibers.

Wooden toys should not contain any traces of paint and be from the permitted species of wood:

Wooden toys can be either static – attached to the floor or walls, or freely lying. All kinds of swings and ladders, houses, shelves, labyrinths and traps are most often made of wood.

When choosing a ceramic toy, you should carefully examine it for the absence of sharp corners or protrusions. You can use flower pots, drainage pipes of suitable diameter and other pottery.

Stone toys are designed to grind constantly growing teeth, and therefore should not contain hazardous inclusions. Most often, stone toys are stones for grinding teeth. Sometimes they take the form of a castle, fruit or vegetable.

All kinds of ropes, hammocks and ladders, ropes, bedding, baskets and bowls are made from plant fibers. The main condition is that the fabric should not be bleached and not dyed.

Metal toys are presented by various running wheels.

DIY pet toy

Toys can be not only purchased. Chinchillas are quite savvy animals and adapt a variety of objects to their games. Even a walnut shell can become a favorite toy of a furry pet. Some breeders prefer to make DIY chinchilla toys. For the most popular option you will need:

Sprigs need to be thoroughly washed and dried, preferably in the oven. Twigs are sawn into small sticks and round. In each of them a hole is drilled with diameters equal to the diameter of the chain. A chain is threaded through all the branches, and key rings on its ends. It’s very convenient for them to hang a finished toy on the walls of the cage. The number of branches and the length of the chain depends only on the desire of the breeder and the size of the cage!

Stuffed Toys

But the use of soft toys is a very controversial issue. Some breeders claim that their pets play with plush toys and even sleep with them in an embrace. However, the majority has negative experience: the toy is quickly torn to pieces, the filler and other parts fall into the pet’s stomach and cause poisoning of varying severity, intestinal obstruction, and even death. If you want, you can try to give a soft toy to your pet and look at his reaction. It is likely that the animal makes friends with the toy. However, this does not mean that after some time the chinchilla’s plush friend will not be torn to pieces.

Chinchilla Carrier

When choosing a carrier, you should focus on what it will be used for. If for a short trip – to the doctor or to the cottage, then it is better to choose a small box, which is easy to put in a bag and insulate if necessary. It is better not to buy too large a carrier – the animal can easily be injured. However, boxing should not be too close – tightness will lead to stuffiness. No need to try to find one carrier for two or more animals: transportation is always carried out in individual boxes.

The most convenient and practical option for carrying is a plastic container.

In the cold season, it is recommended to place the carrying in a bag. You can use any sports bag of a suitable size, or a special one, for transporting animals.

Before placing the animal in the carrier, the bottom must be covered with litter. Usually, sand for bathing chinchillas, sawdust or wood granules acts as a litter. The sand is very convenient, but it is not recommended to use it if the pet is going to the exhibition. Sand grains caught in the coat will distort the pet’s natural color. In the winter months, the use of sand is also controversial for long transport: sand does not store heat well.

In winter, it is recommended to warm the carry with hay, as well as put a little of your favorite treat – this will help to cope with stress.

Clothes, leashes and harnesses for chinchillas

  • Chinchilla fur is easily damaged by any harness and collar,
  • Chinchillas do not walk – they move in leaps. The collar can break the spine, the harness – the ribs,
  • There are quite a few dangerous bacteria, germs, fungi on the street,
  • A sharp change of scenery, new smells and sounds, bright lights – all this will lead to very severe stress and can trigger a heart attack.
  • Usually they walk the chinchilla at home, and for home walks a harness with a leash is not needed.
  • In the same way, leashes and harnesses for exhibitions are not needed – the animal from the carrier is placed in the exhibition box.

Products for chinchillas include a variety of clothes: vests, jackets, shorts, overalls and dresses. You don’t need to talk about the real use of such accessories: you don’t leave the animal in clothes in a cage – in a few minutes the pet will gnaw at everything that it can reach and still get poisoning with a dyed cloth. At exhibitions, animals also do not need additional decorations. The minus is that the chinchilla is a freedom-loving animal, and it can be very difficult to persuade the animal to wear clothing that fetters movement.

It is worth remembering that the fur of the animal is quite dense and warm, which means that you can get a heat stroke from using clothes, especially in the summer months.

Fur care

But what is really necessary is a good brush to care for the fur of the animal. The comb is taught gradually. Chinchillas usually like this procedure and they don’t complain. Regular combing will help to avoid many problems with the skin and fur: dermatitis, fungal diseases, infection with skin parasites. Also, with a comb before the exhibition, you can give your pet a more neat appearance.
