Signs of conjunctivitis in chinchillas

Determining the inflammatory eye disease in chinchillas is not difficult. Symptoms may be different. These are clouded eyes, the appearance of lacrimation. Signs of the disease also include discharge (purulent, cloudy or transparent) and a reddened conjunctiva.

Causes of purulent discharge from the eyes

Most often, the cause of purulent discharge is conjunctivitis. This is one of the most common eye diseases that can affect not only chinchillas, but also pets in general. During this disease, inflammation of the conjunctiva (mucous membrane of the eyes) occurs, symptomatically this is manifested by swelling of the mucosa, lacrimation, souring and suppuration.

What To Do If Chinchilla Eyes Are Festering

In most cases, conjunctivitis occurs against the background of unsanitary conditions of chinchillas (dirty bedding or cage). But there may also be other reasons. For example, purulent discharge from the eyes may be the result of a cold or a viral infection. In this case, you should eliminate the root cause of poor health. This is especially dangerous, because the chinchilla colds can quickly develop into bronchopneumonia. Pay attention to breathing difficulties and wheezing. Another satisfied common culprit for this chinchilla disease is a damaged chinchilla cornea. Sometimes, current eyes can also be a symptom of a very serious illness caused by malocclusion, hooks, or sprouting of a tooth root into the lacrimal canal or eyeball. Do I need to rinse my eyes?

Of course you need. Another question – what?

Quite often, owners use decoctions of medicinal herbs for washing their pets – strong tea, a decoction of chamomile or calendula. Veterinarians do not advise doing this for several reasons: they dry the mucous membrane, it is impossible to maintain a normal concentration of the solution, such decoctions quickly become unusable, becoming a source of secondary bacterial infection.

For washing the eyes of the chinchilla, it is advisable to use special lotions – Lacrimin, Lacrican, Ofto-lavas.

In the absence of special means, you can rinse the eyes of a chinchilla with simple, freshly boiled and chilled water or sterile saline.

Chinchilla eye drops

In case of eye inflammation, veterinarians usually prescribe special eye drops “Tsiprovet” or “human” drops “Tsipromed” sold in a regular pharmacy. Their effect is twofold: broad antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

You can also use drops of "Iris" or "Tobrex." Application: for a sick eye – 1-2 drops 3 times a day, for a healthy eye (as a mandatory prevention) – 1 drop 1-2 times a day. The duration of treatment is 7 days. Also, in case of emergency, you can use 20% solution of sodium sulfacyl, aka "Albutsid", or "Levomycetin." However, remember that these drops cause a burning sensation. In addition, they have only antibacterial action.

In case of an eyeball injury, it is recommended to use drops with taurine – this is a drug that accelerates tissue regeneration. Drops on the basis of taurine – Taufon.

It is extremely important to store the opened bottle correctly. Typically, the duration of the drops after opening the bottle is 7 days. Store open medicine in the refrigerator. Avoid touching the tip of the dropper – this significantly reduces the shelf life of the medicine. Before using drops from the refrigerator, you should heat the bottle in your hand.

Ointments for eyes chinchillas

During conjunctivitis, if the chinchilla’s eyes are festering, many use eye ointments – Hydrocortisone and Tetracycline. If chinchilla has severe lacrimation, ointments must be applied every 2 hours. It is very important to use ointments only as prescribed by the doctor, since self-treatment can lead to perforation of the cornea!
It is recommended to use a special veterinary eye ointment.

Conclusion

Remember that the best treatment is prevention! Watch the cleanliness of the pet’s cage and its hygiene. After swimming in the sand, it is advisable to blow out the face of the chinchilla or rinse the eyes. Do not delay the disease and consult your veterinarian at the first sign of inflammation. It is advisable to find a doctor who specializes specifically in rodents (ratologist) and chinchillas.
